No quote for Peter but what an entrance and introduction to the school.

I remember with huge emotion hearing Vidor's toccatta being blasted out on the organ. That was a treat to experience at the start the day closing the weekday 15 minute service.

Peter worked well with Frank Davies even though his generational difference was most evident! I remain, to this day, delighted to see Crompy at The Royal Albert Hall for the incredible Service of Remembrance each year....

Chuckle. I well remember the bellow from the housemaster's study: "SOME-BOD- EEEEEEEE"

Then there was the loud response to the innocent (!) question posed by a housemate of mine: "Sir. Would you help me with my German? What IS the verb 'to burn'?". Strangely, he lived!

My least favourite teacher was Willie Goode. The reason for this is that Willie really seemed to relish dishing out corporal punishment.

Without trying to judge Willie by today's standards, I would still say he was cruel/sadistic by 1950's standards!

Ken Chapman

For those of us that knew him, it will be sad news indeed of the passing of Ken Chapman last Tuesday from a heart attack suffered on Saturday (25th) morning.

My thanks to him for all the guidance and support given to me during his time as Collingwood Housemaster. One of the best in my humble opinion.

My thanks also to a friend of the board who advised myself and several other Collingwood lads of Ken's passing.

Sleep peacefully Ken with all our gratitude.

With the mention of Henge Seacombe on other parts of the board, I'm reminded of some assistance he provided for us during an english project. He parted with a few old photos in the process.

I was also shocked when he parted with a treasured Welsh/English Dictionary, which he used during visits there, especially to parts of West Wales which I knew through my own roots.

'What are the Neolithic flint mines in Norfolk called'?
I surprised myself and my partner by saying 'Grimes Graves'. This was the correct answer, and more than the contestant knew.

House Matrons

When I started out, the House matron in Howe was Mrs Pulford (I think).

She really was a little matronly figure, kindly granny type who was kind but not some-one I felt one could get close to. Very efficient I guess and was as much a house-keeper as a matron, making sure all the house admin of clean laundry and the like was done to the same extent as running the surgeries three times (?) a day (new ailments in the morning - sports injuries in the afternoon, medication only at...

I was very sad to read elswhere on the board about the death of 'Spud' Tate.

On a recent visit to the school, I came across a memorial garden. I noticed a tribute to Tin Tack Tatton's wife, I think she died circa 1965. Does anybody recall the circumstances. I always remembered her as homely somewhat matronly person, with a cheerful smile for everybody

How did he get the name Piddler?

I remember him from the late 50's as being of a very thin physique with a superior air about him. I wasn't taught by Piddler hence my curiousity!

My favourite teacher was Les Burbidge ! Why? Because he understood the true power of language and words, and he passed that knowledge on to me and others.

Once when discussing a passage from a form book, a boy at the front complained loudly that his opinion wasn't being listened to or considered.

Burbidge said quietly to me that "those who stand at the front of the church and sing the loudest" are usually the biggest sinners !

Cresswell and Crick

'Stan' Cresswell had the misfortune to be my housemaster (Blake) during my time at RHS. I have heard some comment about his 'laid back' style of housemastering, I dont know about that. What I do know is that both 'Stan' and his wife very often went to a lot of trouble in the background to help the ungrateful ingrates in his charge. Mr & Mrs Cresswell for the many kindnesses that you did for me and that I never found out about until many many years later. Thankyou very much.
